Is there VST3 Support Planned?

It's a bizarre and unfortunate situation…

Do we have any news about it? will be great to be able to use it also in the future.

There should be updates in the future, I've said as much. It should be well before Steinberg pulls the plug on VST2 in their software.

I'm not sure about Cthulhu, due to VST3 lacking proper MIDI out handling. Eveything else is being actively worked on, but there is a good window of time ahead, stability is of course important and Steinberg will probably honor the 24 months ahead before dropping VST2 from their products.

It really is a bizarre situation to remove something time-tested and working, VST3 offers no clear technical benefit (the touted user-facing improvements such as sample-accurate automation are not even implemented in virtually all VST3 plugins, and could have been extended to VST2). Fortunately for most users other than Steinberg users, VST2 support should be around for a long time.

Unfortunately if I understand well starting from Cubase 12, vst2 is not supported anymore in the native M1 version so that gives Cubase users with M1 2 options: use cubase under rosetta to use serum or …use cubase native without serum. In my case, I have the m1 since December 2020 and I can't wait to finally use my machine at full potential and I think many users fell the same. On the other side, although Steinberg is honouring the 24 months, they are really 9 months becasuse on December 2022 rosetta 2 will finish the 2 years transition so altrouhg serum is m1 native will not be usable anymore inside of cubase.

Cubase 12 Released! Just upgraded
I couldn't load Serum with native arm64 Cubase 12!

Yes I can confirm this also, no serum or lfotool with cubase 12 on my m1 macbook.

inform Steinberg about it.
After all It's them who removed features/compatibilities.

Steve, where is the VST3 version? It has been known for many, many years that VST2 will eventually become obsolete.

I don't have an ETA. This is Steinberg's decision to kill VST2, which has no fundamental issues. It's a significant departure from VST2, in my case it means re-writing most everything as I am doing it properly, e.g. most all VST3's are e.g. juce-built and don't even support the VST3 "benefits" such as sample-accurate automation. Progress is being made, but it's too early to make any promises.

No need for playing any blame games, I'm pretty sure Steinberg already know about it since they're the ones who implemented the change. We've known this day was coming for quite a while now & vst2 has only been dropped for now with apple silicon computers. You can still run serum as a vst2 in rosetta mode but there is a big negative hit in performance compared to running native.

I'm glad Steve that you're working on a vst3 version & taking the time to do it right. In the meantime I've been using Hive 2 for wavetable synthesis, it's a great synth but definitely not a direct substitute for what Serum can do.

EDIT: I should also add that I'm still using Serum with Ableton Live, so it's not all bad.

Would love to be able to use Serum again (Cubase 12, VST3 so that my sessions don't 'break' when I invariably go Native M1 mode in a few months instead of using emulation).

Also, with FXpansion(Roli) Geist2 drum machine biting the dust (I saw the writing on the wall and retired it awhile back), I'm eager to see Nerve brought back to life in the future with a VST3 version :)

Please, write VST3 version of Serum. We are going forward, but now all Cubase 12 users, and there will be more and more of us every day, can't use Serum anymore.

Thats only if you use M1/2. I can use VST2/Serum in Cubase 12.. but I wont be up grading to an M1/2 for a couple more years. Too many plugins that I use are not compatible with M1/2 yet. Hopefully Serum will be VST3 by then… because I cant live without Serum in my session.

Serum VST3 should be available in the next month or so, it's currently in testing (which customers can access via the Discord link atop the Serum forum).

That's sick! Thank you

Hey, good timing! My PC just came in. I'll hop on the discord and start testing!

Really pleased to hear VST3 version is getting close(ish), Thanks for all the hard work I'm sure you have put into this. :)

Came here to find VST3 support for my beloved Serum.. Its not just Xfer - I support your approach of getting it done right and tested first. Most of the NI plugs I use are VST2 still - and sound toys etc. Also I lose Virus control if I upgrade. My only option is to stick on Cubase 11! What a mess.

I'd also like to see VST3, because note velocities are now unavailable in FL Studio.

Hey, I would like to enter into a test of Serum vst3 (I'm a Mac m1pro + cubase 12 user), the Discord invitation is expired. Any hint? Thanks!

How is the progress on this, Steve? Also, are we getting the VST3 version of LFO Tool any time soon?
