Serum: Making a "harmonic series" type wavetable, but with other scales?

Started by mysevisa1

Hey!

I need some fresh eyes on an idea I want to try out, hopefully I'm in the right place:) So, having recently figured out that one of the standard wavetables of Serum is the harmonic scale (awesome!!!) I can imagine how cool it would be to have ANY scale (chromatic, major, minor, modes….) represented by sine cycles in a similar wavetable, and being able to morph around with it. I'm just curious how it would sound if a bass had overtones that were the literal notes of the key of the song, for instance. Or just the idea that one note could contain little "melodies" on its own. Makes sense?

Now, the harmonic scale wavetable is obviously just frames with the harmonic order (which is literally visible in the wavetable editor), but I don't know how I would go about making a different order. Is it even possible? Is this idea nonsense? I guess this can be done within a single octave with an LFO modulating the semitones of an osc set to sine, with smoothing. But what if I wanted that modulation more like a Macro, and more than one octave? Possible? Not? I appreciate any thoughts, or other ideas on how to morph between sine waves in other orders than the harmonic series. Thanks!:)

You need to use higher harmonics to get the ratios necessary for other scales. In other words you need to disclude the fundamental from the wavetable. If you're result seeking, a good option might be to use tuning system, tun files or MTS-ESP, which is a sensible way to play with ratios/intervals without needing to construct wavetables for that purpose.

P.S. Lance Thackeray was exploring scales/chords in WT a while back:

Hey, Steve!

Excited to hear from the developer!:D Wow ok, I didn't realize how quickly the harmonic series gets chromatic-ish, that'll work. Thanks! I just started from bin 16 and turned it a few octaves down. I think it sounds pretty unusual, fun to hear some "new" overtones in the weird tuning of the harmonic series. Made a Serum bass with Messiaen's 2nd mode of limited transposition (every other half step and whole step). Have a listen if you're curious, cheers and have a great day!:)
