Reverb Question

Started by yayger1

Hey Steve, so I have a question regarding the size, and width functions on your reverb in Serum. Ive been focusing on getting my mixes sounding really good in both mono and stereo, and I noticed that reverbs usually have a stereo function knob on them. So I'm just curious out of the two knobs (width and size) which one translates into the mono/stereo knob?

Also I've been trying this thing where I duplicate my external reverb effect, keep one at 100% default stereo, and one at 0% stereo/mono so my transition to mono would sound a bit better and fuller with the reverb. Now I'm noticing I can't do that in Serum because you're only allowed to use one instance of effects in Serum. so is there any way I could use Serum as a reverb bus or just take a different signal output in general, sort of as an FX plugin?

There is an FX version of Serum which will allow you to process any audio signal with the Serum FX rack.  It will be free to all Serum users soon.
As for stereo reverb,  it's quite a similar concept to having a stereo delay with cross-feeding.  The left and right input appear in each others output, and you have a lot of "pseudo stereo" (phase de-correlation) due to differences in delay times between the R and L outputs.  Ultimately I wouldn't be too concerned at all with "Mono compatibility" if you are using reverb in traditional ways (e.g. 5-20% wet).   But like anything else, having something "wide" and "mono compatible" are in direct competition with each other,  I think it is stupid to sacrifice a stereo experience (majority of listeners) for obsessing on mono compatible.  Especially with something like a reverb, where the phase (in)coherency is constantly shifting so it's not an extreme concern (a little volume flutter in mono but not a straight null to silence).

I think you're right, I might have been over complicating it. I recently came to the conclusion that the flatness of the transition to mono was due to phase cancelation, so using stereo imager plugins I was able to combat that and fix the issue. I just have this urge to get my mix sounding as best as possible in both mono and stereo and I felt reverb would be the missing link. After all if you're telling me not to worry then i guess i really shouldn't be worrying. I appreciate your help replying to people in this forum/community, and love the work you put into xferrecords. Will be looking out for serum fx!
