no presets in demo version for mac?

presets are included in the demo - there typically isn't/shouldn't be an issue. Can you clarify further where you're looking?

when I double-click on the Serum icon on the channel strip it pops up the instrument. usually in Logic in the box initially populated with "Manual" if you pull down the drop down menu you get a list of presets, but this is blank. when I try "Load" it pops up Finder with an empty window in the Serum folder.

The preset handling of Serum is from within the Serum UI (blue text top-center or the browser button to its right). There are no .aupresets unless you make some yourself.
