Mono Legato Retrigger Problem

Started by kelelee

Hi Xfer Forum and Steve, I’ve been testing the demo version of serum.

I came across a problem, which would be quite critical for my productions, an explanation is highly appreciated.

When I use a Synth in Mono Legato Mode to add portamento to my notes, I want the notes to retrigger the oscillator everytime UNLESS I use a legato note, meaning I press a note while another note is already playing, in which case the already playing waveform is allowed continue to run, otherwise no portamento effect would be achieved.

If Serum is operating in Mono Legato Portamento mode and I just continuously play for example quarter notes of the same pitch (lets say F1) placed neatly on the grid one after another without overlapping legato notes, the oscillator should retrigger everytime (if I set the Initial Phase and random phase knobs all the way to zero).

But this is not happening; as soon as Serum is working in Mono mode, continuously playing for example quarter notes of the same pitch results in the oscillator free running and not retriggering.

Am I doing something wrong or is this feature not implemented in Serum?

If you want to test this with a Synth that has implemented it, you can see a working example in Sylenth1.

Let me know if you need more information (like images or a video of the scenario described)

cheers

Kelelelee, I just spent all morning trying to work out the same thing I think that you are looking for here.

[ WHAT I'M DOING ]

I'm playing a sound on monophonic mode.
With or without legato, shouldn't matter.
I hold a long sustained low C note
I keep tapping a hight C note in a staccato fashion, whilst still holding the low C note.

[ WHAT I WANT TO HAPPEN ]

The low C note plays when I first presss it.
The low C note is interrupted when I play the high C note.
When I let go of the high C note, the low C note (that I'm still holding on the keyboard) is retriggered again and plays until the next time I press high C again.

[ WHAT HAPPENS INSTEAD ]

The low C note plays only once, and then is interrupted by the first high C note.
When I let go of the high C note (before playing high C again), there is silence; no note.
I now only hear the high C notes as I press them, even though I'm still holding down the low C on my keyboard.
Serum isn't retriggering the low C note in between me pressing the high C note.

[ THE SOLUTION ]

I found something in the MENU that says "MPE Enabled".
I enabled it.
By golly, it suddenly works the way I intended.
