Hey guys, So I've been doing this thing lately which was pretty fun and made the song heavy, nice riser to a drop, and during the drop is where my bass drum and sub were both introduced. It would sound insanely heavy with headphones but with DC club speakers it sounds like absolute shit, just straight deep "wuu wuuu wuu wuu" rumble. This is what id do, usually just rip a nice fat vengeance sample but 9 out of 10 times it's a bass heavy kick (bass drum) and ill arpeggiate my subbass at around 1/8 and side chain my kick to my subbass, find my initial peak in sound (30Hz sub & 60Hz kick) and ill brick wall anything underneath that to create a nice space, and take away that excess energy thats making the track muddy. Somehow theres mud still, And am carving some 300 Hz from my kick. i take the low out of everything thats not a bass, and even some low from the bass itself. I've also been ripping lows from my kicks and putting 808's under them to solve the issue, but now it just sounds super empty in between the kicks during the drop. and yes I'm side chaining, anybody know how i could fix this issue?
I would suggest posting this in a music production forum such as theproducersforum.com but if anyone here wants to reply of course feel free, I just don't want to start using this forum for production advice.
Hi Steve
Great admirer of your work and willingness to share your knowledge. Totally understand that you want to seperate concerns. Are you active on theproducersforum, or what is the correct way (if any) to seek your advice on mixing issues?
All the best,
Anders
I appreciate your nice words, but really, I'm not very interested in giving mixing advice. To me it is similar to trying to discuss, say for example, chord progressions. There are too many facets relating to specific situations and too few "rules" that can be said with outright confidence. I recommend practice over external resources, especially advice suggesting Product X or Y. There are a lot of good resources like Pensado's Place, but again, this is a lot of opinions and you should look beyond specific tools and more at techniques (what are the problems that these "solutions" are solving, and what is creating the solution?). Even better, just create your own solutions as needed, then in 10 or 20 years, people will want to know YOUR techniques.
Excellent advice, thanks!
