Hi Steve,
I'm fairly new to all this and one thing I simply don't understand is, if I drop a MIDI file into Cubase, it plays, as to my understanding, the Midi Notes plus the stuff coming from Nerve. (I get to hear sounds which are not part of the MIDI file.)
What am I supposed to do, if I just want to hear the notes inside the DAW?

MIDI doesn't contain sounds. "if I want to hear the notes inside the DAW" doesn't really make sense to me either, MIDI is just note information. there are two reasons to drag MIDI out from Nerve essentially.
- dragging Nerve's MIDI to it's own track to re-play Nerve, e.g. , either to arrange or add fills, etc.
or
- to trigger something else with the MIDI e.g. some drum sampler with drum sounds mapped
