Cthulhu : Preset menus blank

Started by coldcity

Hi all,

Try as I might, I can't get the Cthulhu demo to display any Chord or Arp presets.

I'm on Win 7, using Ableton Live Suite 9 64 bit. When  I installed the Cthulhu demo I selected only VST (x64) and Cthulu Presets.

It looks like the only file installed was Cthulhu_x64.dll in my VstPlugins folder. I don't see a presets folder, either in the VstPlugins folder or anywhere in the Documents hierachy.

Any tips much appreciated, I really wanna try this bad boy!

Best regards,

Presets should be in Documents/Xfer.  I would recommend deleting Cthulhu_x64.dll and re-install using right-click -> "run as administrator".  If that doesn't solve the situation please click the Cthulhu logo and tell me what version info you see there.

Hi Steve, thanks for the advice.

I tried that, but no dice; same result. I don't see anything created under Documents and the preset menus are empty.

Is there any command line option for the installer that would let me view its log? As the installer whizzes by I'm sure I see "Skipping <filename>…." messages flashing past; I wonder if I have some wider permissions issue.

Thanks again for your help, and some amazeballs plugs :)

Best regards,
Iain

Just to add the version info as requested: Version 1.0.2b2Demo.

It's from the current demo download.

You might be able to open the installer with 7-zip, I haven't tried and I'm away from my Windows machine at the moment.

Steve,

Problem sorted!

I was indeed able to unpack the installer and grab the Cthulu Presets folder. However, nowhere I stuck it seemed to work.

So, I used the trusty ProcessMonitor from https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645.aspx to monitor file access, and discovered it was actually looking for C:\Users\<username>\Desktop\Cthulu Presets.

When I placed the folder there on the desktop, boom, I have presets :)

I suspect the installer and VST are not quite checking the correct locations when looking for Documents. I do see a few reports around the web of this missing preset issue so am assuming it's not just me.

I'm not sure if you're using the %USERPROFILE%\Documents environment variable to locate the user's docs folder or a different technique, but it seems a little finicky. I think you're possibly primarily a non-Windows dev using JUCE or similar? Do let me know if I can assist with resolving this problem; I'm a dev too and can do detailed testing / suggest more reliable Win32 calls to locate Documents.

OK, now to check out Cthulhu!!

All the very best,
Iain
